Brading

An ancient town near Sandown, once of some significance. Granted a royal charter, it once returned two MPs. The tiny town hall houses a museum, and underneath are the stocks and the old town lock-up.

Turn left by the wax museum opposite for a walk across the marshes, originally a natural lagoon with its entrance at Bembridge until reclaimed in the 19th century. Other buildings of note are Morton Manor and Nunwell House, both open to the public, and the remains of a Roman villa. The stake in the village centre, or Bull Ring, was originally used to tether bulls.
