ST LAWRENCE

PUB PAGE

Charming village not two miles from Ventnor. Best known perhaps for what you can’t see from the road. The home of the Twining – of tea fame family, Spindlier, the German millionaire who endeavoured to build a model village beginning with a harbour which soon fell victim to the sea. The huge Carfax Pension, which served for many years as the nearest Hotel to the Royal Hospital, now the Botanical Gardens and in the new church, may be seen many of the stained glass windows that once belonged to the Hospital.

A pub has always stood on the site, but closed a few years back. With careful planning, the stables of the Carfax Pension – once a hotel, for the Royal National Hospital, and the basement of the previous pub, has been turned into a very pleasant one bar hostelry with convenient car park. Attached, is the very popular Yates brewery, which is gaining a reputation for good honest beer. Adjacent to the Rare Breed Park with its bracing air, and the Ventnor Botanical Gardens, once the site of the Royal National Hospital
