SHALFLEET

PUB PAGE

Tiny village on main Newport-Yarmouth road. Shalfleet quay, on the shores of Newtown creek, is popular for yachting and an attractive area for picnickers and walkers. Nearby Newtown, one-time capital of the Island before French raiders made a habit of burning it down (it used to be called 'Francheville' for that reason) is even more attractive. The ancient 'Francheville Arms', closed many years ago, and is now owned by the National Trust.

Un-miscible as you travel through Shalfleet on the Newport to Yarmouth Road, the New Inn has stood at the entrance to Mill Road for three hundred years. An ancient and largely unspoilt Country Local with flagstone floor and huge log fire. The good beer and food, especially fish and seafood for which the pub is noted, continue to entice locals from inland and seafarers up the lane from Shalfleet creek. The roaring log fire is a delight in the winter and for the summer; the rustic chairs and tables along the outside and with the ample garden supplement the accommodation for the families. Ding pub of the year 2002.
