CHALE |
Map Reference D5 A small village near the famous Blackgang Chine, a theme park built on the sides of unstable cliffs, much of which have fallen away, and taken a large chunk of the Chine with them. That which is left is worth a visit, if only because it is likely to slide to the bottom of the cliffs before too long.

Guest Ale (local)
Winner of several national awards, with large
car parks front and rear, beer gardens and swings, slides, climbing frames, ball
pond, and 6 real ales, not to mention the various collections such as antique
musical instruments adorning the walls and ceilings. The oak beams used in the
building were rescued from the sailing ship, "Clarendon", after which
the adjacent hotel was named and the panelling on the bar from another wreck,
the "Varvassi". The pub is enormously popular with locals and
visitors, due mainly to its reasonably priced menu and location close to
picturesque beaches and tourist attractions. With a recent massive refurbishment
under its new owners, and incorporating the Clarendon Hotel into the huge bar
area, the re-design of the bar has now taken advantage of the stunning views
towards the sunset and Freshwater Cliffs. Well worth a visit.
