An ancient town near Sandown, once of some significance. Granted a royal charter, it once returned two MPs. The tiny town hall houses a museum, and underneath are the stocks and the old town lock-up. Turn left by the wax museum opposite for a walk across the marshes, originally a natural lagoon with its entrance at Bembridge until reclaimed in the 19th century. Other buildings of note are Morton Manor and Nunwell House, both open to the public, and the remains of a Roman villa. The stake in the village centre, or Bull Ring, was originally used to tether bulls.

Large food orientated pub with an extensive menu, which includes a hugely popular Sunday carvery. Friday night is curry night when you can eat all you want. The local trade has not been forgotten, and to one end of the building are facilities for pub games with a traditional public bar feeling. Good outdoor facilities for children and the addition of an indoor play area makes a welcome retreat for families on inclement days. An ever-changing beer range will find three ales rotating monthly, in tip-top condition. An enthusiastic young team guaranties that this pub continues to thrive and can offer ever-changing delicacies for the early and late breaks as well as high season top quality.

After a complete refurbishment in late 1996, this friendly street corner local has still retained its public bar, complete with darts board and pool table. If it’s a jukebox you like, and some people do, stay in the public bar, but for a comfortable background music only atmosphere, try the lounge. Large car park and patio area.

Previously known as the “Anglers”, this very pleasant single bar pub has had a new lease of life since changing its name. There is now a separate, cosy lounge for dining or getting away from it all, for that intimate conversation. There is a choice of roast, Thursdays and Sundays and for the rest of the week there is plenty to enjoy from the standard menu and specials board. What is different is that Stagecoach trains, running from Ryde to Shanklin are not only a stones throw away, but there is a model railway running around the bar and plenty of memorabilia to go with it. Put your money on a station and you could win a prize. Outside there is a safe area for kids, with adventure playground and paved area with parasols for the Mums and Dads.
