BEMBRIDGE

PUB PAGE

A small town on the eastern tip of the Island, which boasts a large and picturesque harbour. Unfortunately, modern developments have neither improved the town nor the harbour. Bembridge windmill is the last surviving example on the Island, and is open to the public.

A tortuous wind through the Village of Bembridge is well rewarded, when the sea is reached and the only building left is the Coastguard Lookout Station. You will now have arrived at the Crab and Lobster, renowned over the years for its seafood, and in spite of numerous refurbishments still retains much of its charm. With wild views over the English Channel and the notorious Bembridge Ledge it is no wonder that just around the headland is the Islands second Lifeboat Station. There are four en-suite double bedrooms available for B & B accommodation and a family room.

One bar pub that is best known for its exterior, converted to resemble a ship in 1935, hence its name. Thanks to its lively and enthusiastic staff, it is now a thriving community pub with customers giving it a buzz. The menu is very impressive, and the courtyard is a real suntrap. The extensive menu has a lot to offer, being very interesting and imaginative with daily specials. Friday evening has a happy hour with live music Saturdays. There is a quiz on Wednesday evening.

A friendly pub with good beer and food. Closed for a while, but now under the same management as the Old Comical, Sandown. As you would expect there is plenty of aircraft memorabilia. There is a restaurant, and nearby, camp sites. Busy during the summer months when the runway seems rather close at times. Stretching back to the beginning of flight, Bembridge Airport now plays host to the Schneider Trophy event when the skies are filled with planes. There is a small room to the side where a game of Pool can be played.

Imposing hotel at the entrance to the village, a blaze of colour throughout the summer, from the many huge hanging baskets. Once inside, you will find that the present owner of the Hotel has tastefully rebuilt the whole of the downstairs into one large bar. Formerly known as the ‘Birdham’, the ground floor, including the bar and restaurant, are run by the Islands foremost outside caterers, Five Star, and under the personal supervision of Gill and Paul Rogers. There are interesting aviation and shipping photographs throughout. Music for relaxing, are played at the piano on Friday evening and Sunday lunchtime, with a guitar on Tuesday. An added attraction is that the hotel is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and available for private parties.

Single bar village pub with regular guest ales. Ye Olde Village Inn is a well-established traditional public house dating back to 1787. An historical feature has recently been found in the form of a water reservoir dating back to the pubs brewing days.
